The game black myth Wukong is now available for PS5 and PC.

Less than 24 hours after launching, it had over 2 million players on Steam and ranked second on the all-time charts beating out titles like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077.

Some actual stats

It sold over 3 million copies just on Steam, and over 4.5 million copies total when you count other places like Epic Games and PS5, all in just one day! Many people liked it too—96% of the 115,569 people who reviewed it on Steam said it was awesome.

It's impossible to ignore something when people are rooting this much.

How did it all begin

Game Science, started with just seven people in 2014. They made a couple of mobile games before starting work on Wukong in 2017.

It took about three years from when they showed the first trailer, which was originally just to get more people to join their team. The trailer's beautiful graphics got a lot of attention, and some people even questioned if it was real because it looked so good.

Black Myth: Wukong is such a big hit, breaking records so fast because it's a single-player game with no microtransactions. Game Science made it clear from the start: buy the game, and you get the full experience. There might be extra cosmetics or DLC later, but players love that they get a complete game right away.

Another reason is the vision behind the game. Black Myth: Wukong is based upon a popular Chinese novel "Journey to the West".

This game feels epic, and it’s a bit like the style of God of War. Since the story is so legendary—look at how well Dragon Ball Z has done, which is also based on the same novel—fans were excited from the start!

Game Science didn’t just rely on the cool story to make Black Myth: Wukong a success—they made sure the game itself was really fun.

The game idea isn’t new, but when everything is done so well then people can’t ignore it.

From the beginning, the game creators focused on two main things.

The combat and the boss fight. While everyone was amazed at how stunning the graphics were, it was clear how smooth and exciting the action felt. Each boss in the game looked unique and awesome.

Everything about the game stands out—how you hit, dodge, and the way the animations flow, plus the cool variety of bosses.

But that’s just the beginning!

The game also has a big, exciting story with emotional moments, like the amazing opening scene.

You can explore different places, fight enemies, complete quests, find loot, and unlock upgrades—just like many action RPGs. But what makes Wukong special is the ability to transform and collect Spirits, kind of like catching Pokémon. This adds even more variety and fun to the combat!

Looking back at 2024, other games like Palia and Helldivers 2 also became huge hits. Palia was made by a small team but offered something new and exciting in a familiar genre. Helldivers 2 focused on multiplayer with ongoing wars that felt real and had big consequences.

Wukong, it started with a small team and took a long time to develop, but it paid off in the end!

Black Myth: Wukong and other games like it stand out because they give players a fun experience, even if they have some issues.

This is very different from some big, expensive games like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Skull and Bones. Those games focus too much on making money with extra purchases and live updates, but their gameplay and story aren’t exciting enough, especially for a $70 price tag.

These games try to make more money over time and keep players coming back, which is good for companies, but not always what players want.

Some people might say Black Myth: Wukong is popular because of its big Chinese audience on Steam, and most reviews are indeed in Chinese.

The game's release saw a lot of traffic from Asia, much more than Europe or North America. But the real reason it’s so popular is because it’s based on Journey to the West and looks and plays amazingly well.

People are also excited that big, high-quality games are being made in different parts of the world.

However, making a successful game isn’t just about having lots of content, great gameplay, stunning graphics, or a good story. It’s about creating something truly unique.

Black Myth: Wukong does this by being different from anything we’ve seen before. Game Science spent years perfecting every detail, and now their hard work is paying off.

Everyone is excited to see what the studio will do next and if they’ll expand the Black Myth universe with new projects.
